I never heard Rowland S Howard until I heard he was dying and he had a new record and you should go to the show… cos he's not long for this world. So I went and he was looking ill. Like, sick ill… yeah. He played some songs at the Prince Band Room and had the lyrics on paper on a music stand beside the mic and he kept pulling out a hanky from his pocket during the set and wiping blood from his lips. It was a very very very very grouse gig. Very fucking grouse, sistas! and then at the end we're all "one more, one more!" and he walks back up to the mic and wipes blood off his face again and goes (just off the cuff like this) he goes "Okay, we will do one more…. just to prove you can get blood from a stone" and then he laughed that laugh that he laughs. Cute like. Cheeky. Laughing to himself. And I assumed he was stoned (which i'm told wasn't the case) so there was a stone/stoned pun in there. Or allusion is it? Not a pun? Maybe a pun, i dunno. the album was pop crimes and its the business!
If mebournians are selling australia, australians & my vast history down the sewer by obsessively & pathetically gifting to England unrequested & unrequited midnight wristies…. then rowland s howard is a rare australian hero and a king. An honourable soldier.
